The italian civil protection experience in the international context
The management of several emergencies and “major events”, which have affected our country during recent years, has improved the experience of the National Civil Protection Service, which is based on the central coordination of a complex and co-ordinated system.
This experience has also enhanced the national interventions abroad. The Italian Civil Protection Service has not only produced a prompt response during initial emergency phases, but has also undertaken all activities aimed at recovering normal conditions as soon as possible. The Italian Civil Protection activity abroad can be represented by four emblematical examples : the intervention in Sri Lanka after the tsunami that affected South East Asia on December 26th 2004, the help offered to the U.S.A. after hurricane Katrina and to Pakistan after the earthquake in 2005, as well as the recent experience in South Sudan, where a long civil war has led to dramatic social, economic and health conditions for the population.
These efforts abroad have been the reason why the President of the Republic has decided to confer two gold civil honour medals to the Italian Civil Protection Service.
