This article describes the risk management activity of ACEA, the biggest Italian water management organization, and in particular the activity of LaboratoRI (Lab services, Research Innovation), an ACEA group Company, founded after the strategic alliance between ACEA and the British Water Research Centre.
The article focuses on the prevention and mitigation activities that ACEA and LaboratoRI have undertaken for the water network that supplies the Greater Rome district.
In terms of prevention, the company has developed early warning sensors, on-line monitoring devices and fast response analyses.
In terms of mitigation, the network has been divided into “water zones” : restriction of any contaminated zone by means of “districts” defined through mathematical model applications.
LaboratoRI is carrying out research activities in the following fields :
- prevention : widening of detection spectrum (chemical, radiological and biological agents),
- mitigation : integration of prevention methods with mathematical models for scenario simulations.
