Understanding different conditions for communicating in order to work with scenarios
Two studies have been carried out to analyse the efficiency of communication between the authorities, the media and the public. Events such as the explosion of a warehouse storing fireworks and the occurrence of a hurricane were used as examples by Nina Blom Andersen to show the authorities possible actions and constraints to be taken into account, in order to prevent a large group of people from being hurt in a threatening situation.
The conclusion is that in a threatening situation the authorities have to take into account at least three different factors related to communication to the public : the public’s experiences with similar situations, the public’s trust in authorities and the public’s knowledge in relation to the threat. This means that authorities have to communicate with the public in a variety of different ways during a crisis.
