Workshop 3 in Siena: Response
Protecting water systems and aqueducts, the main theme and case-scenario of the Siena workshop, is a subject towards which our city has paid a lot of attention over the years.
Since ancient times, as far back as 1200 A.C., Siena has recognized water-related problems as being central for the city, creating an underground water supply system for its well renowned fountains that is over 23 kilometres long.
Already at that time, the strategic importance of water exposed Siena to risks whereby water could be used as an instrument of enemy attack through contamination within the city, which put the citizens of Siena at a greater risk in terms of security.
The authorities of that time made the protection of their aqueducts one of the strong points of the city government.
