Early warning of flooding (Dept. of Gard, Nîmes)
Pascal Venzac, Météo-France
Floods can bring with them huge losses and a lot of damage. To prevent catastrophes one has to do everything possible. The earliest stage in case of emergency is the early warning of floods or flash floods through constant monitoring. Météo France is constantly monitoring the river flows and river levels and other environmental aspects (rainfall etc.) in the river system of Southern France. These data is then always compared with historical databases to enable slight predictions and is categorised in three different precaution categories. The system was only tested yet, but works well so far and is going to be adopted by around 40 cities and several private companies. It also has already helped to prevent some damages.
