Document Actions
Petr Beran & Pavel Uher, Prague

In August 2002 Prague was hit the heaviest flood in its modern history. With heavy rainfalls all over the countryside, water levels in all streams flowing through Prague exceeded most of the flood marks of the highest historical floods recorded. In Prague the protection of the population and property in case of floods is regulated by the Water Act, which contains direct references to other laws governing emergency and crisis situations. It also includes several precautions in individual water projects, in the planning of flood zones, in flood audits, flood forecasting and warning service and regular maintenance of the stream beds. The warnings are attempted through a forecasting system consisting of transmitting accurate time data about the raise of water levels, mathematical models of precipitation-outflow relationship, models for optimising the dam manipulation and weather forecasting. Inside the city, communication and especially information is gathered from the Rescue Security Systems with its many monitoring methods for all kinds of emergency situations and disasters.
